We started a new chapter today in Math. We will be learning about different types of charts and math tables. With these math tools we will learn how to read them and answer questions with information we read from each. Today, use the tally tables to answer the questions. With the Elementary Values and Vision committee, our students are working to learn more about responsibility and what that means in our everyday lives. Today we wrote a definition of what we think responsibility means to us. These writings will be posted in the elementary hallway next to the "Responsibility" poster. Complete the worksheets by showing all of your work and finding the important words in the story problems. We will correct these papers in class tomorrow to help us practice and study for the Chapter Test on Thursday.

Use your notebook and other Math papers to study the following topics: comparing numbers (greater than, less than, equal to), ordinal numbers, solving story problems (by finding important words: more and less), rounding numbers to the nearest 10.

Today we started our writing assessment for the first trimester. Our topic is our grandparents. We interviewed them on Friday in class and we are using their answers and other information we already know about them to write a story about these wonderful people. This writing assessment is an IN CLASS project and we will continue to work on this throughout this week and possibly into next week.

We will be sharing our work with our families when the process of writing this story is complete. Today we began brainstorming ideas.

Complete the worksheet by finding numbers that will round to the 10 that is written on the top of each question. The last two (110 and 120) are challenge questions for you. I want to see if you know your numbers above 100.

We will be having our next chapter test on Tuesday, November 3rd. This test will cover ordinal numbers, comparing numbers (greater than, less than and equal to), and rounding. These concepts will be tested with numbers and in the form of problem solving. Start practicing with all of the problems we have completed in our Math Notebook.

• Rounding numbers to the nearest 10

In your Math notebook, draw a pitcure of a balloon and choose a number between 1-100. Write your number in the balloon. You can not choose a ten or the number 18. Write the following sentences in your notebook and fill in the blanks with the number that tells you to round up or down, if you are rounding up or down and what number you are rounding to.

In your notebook:

I take __ fingers away from the balloon. I am rounding __(up/down) to ___(number).

You need to complete both sentences for this number. Think about how many fingers you will take away from a balloon to help you know if you need to round up or down. You can use a real balloon to help you think about rounding up or down. Ask yourself: Will the balloon go up or stay the same?

You can do more numbers in your notebook to practice rounding.

• Give an invitation to a grandparent

Give the invitation you made in class to a grandparent you know. You can give it to one of your grandparents or a grandparent you know and would like to have come to class. Remember, the invitations we made are in English, so it is your responsibility to give it to this grandparent and translate all of the information for them in Sapnish so they know where, when and why they are coming to school. This party is only for 2B students and grandparents!

The following are the guidelines for wearing costumes to school this Friday, October 30th. Please read them carefully so there are no confusions. Thank you.

1. Students need to wear costumes that willl permit them to participate in ALL classes. (including P.E.)

2. For safety reasons, real objexts such as knives, swords, machetes, etc. are NOT allowed!

3. No costume should be sexually suggestive, show violence, or convey inappropriate messages.

4. Full head masks are not allowed.

5. No roller blades, scooters or skateboards are allowed.

6. Hair spray, makeup coloring, fake blood, etc. are to be left at home.

7. Corss-dressing (boys dressing as girls or vice versa) is not permitted.

8. Politally-sensitive costumes that glorify people who break civil law, (guerrilleros o paramilitares) are NOT allowed.

9. Any student who chooses to come in an inappropriate costume will be sent to the office where his/her parents will be phoned and instructed to bring a complete uniform to school.

10. If you are not wearing a costume, students need to wear the complete school uniform.

• 1st Trimester Grades

The first trimester is coming to an end. If you have a D (69%) or lower in any class you will be asked to stay after school one day (or possibly more) with Miss Jill to practice the topics we have been learning in class during this trimester and improve your grade before the end of the trimester. You will only need to stay after school if you receive a note in your Agenda telling you what day(s). Please check your grades at http://www.engrade.com/ if you have any questions about what grade you are getting in each subject.

In class we did activities in writing sentences using object pronouns for people and things. We also are working on writing sentences with plural and singular objects and pairing those with "is" and "are" verbs to create grammatically correct writing in English. Keep practicing these things in English at home and in school with your writing and talking.
